Death
Zelda Mae Oakley, 73, of Greentown, died Monday at home. Her husband, Melvin Oakley, died in 2001. Born Feb. 2, 1940, in Brooklyn, N.Y., daughter of the late David and Grizelda Anderson Beynon, she was a graduate of Scranton Technical High School. Before retirement, she was employed at the Lords Valley Country Club. Zelda's greatest joy was spending time with her kids, and especially her grandchildren. She was an inspiration to both her children and grandchildren and was known for teaching them to be independent and creative. Zelda will always be remembered for her wit and giving it to you straight. She was a funny, loving and caring mother, grandmother, sister and niece, and will be sadly missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her aunt and best friend, Marge Rhodes, Scranton; four children, Melvin D. Oakley and wife, Ruth, Hop Bottom; Benjamin W. Oakley and wife, Michele, Montdale; Alzaida Jo Siegfried and husband, Rick, Newfoundland; and Zinda Lue Liford and husband, Jerry, South Gibson; two brothers, David Beynon, Moscow; and Benjamin Beynon, South Canaan; eight grandchildren, Theodore M. Oakley, Alicia C. Oakley, Benjamin M. Oakley, Jonathan W. Oakley, Trevor J. Siegfried, Goldie G. Siegfried, Nicholas X. Siegfried and Daniel T. Liford; nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Ann Marie Decker. The funeral will be Saturday at 11 a.m. from the Jenkins Funeral Home, 269 Belmont St., Waymart, conducted by Pastor Jeremy Mullen of the Trinity Congregational Church in Scranton.
